New ways of living

Ten years ago, I wrote a post on my website titled, Our Virtual World. At that time, some people thought I was being delusional and others wondered about the relevance of such a topic. Fast forward to 2020 and there is no doubt that the focus of the entire world has shifted to how we can do things remotely, including having virtual classes and work meetings.

For many people around the world, 2020 was a scary year and 2021 was slightly better. If like me, you grew up in the developing world, you must have heard of or experienced outbreak of diseases or famine in your country or neighbouring countries.

Before the COVD-19 pandemic, I had read about other outbreaks, the most recent being the Swine flu (H1N1) of 2009 -2010. Since I arrived in Canada as a permanent resident in the summer of 2010, I had no idea what a city actually looked like during a pandemic. Cities on lockdown, eerie silence outdoors except for the occasional car or person I saw while taking a walk; it all seemed like a scene from a scary movie. Thankfully, it did not seem apocalyptical, at least not to me, as there were no acts of vandalism. Wearing a face mask every time I left my apartment has become my new normal. Maintaining a safe distance from the random person I encountered in stores or on sidewalks has also become second nature.

During the current pandemic, communities and individuals have displayed the high calibre that humans are made of. Nurses, doctors, paramedics, grocery store workers, fire fighters, Members of the Armed Forces and Law Enforcement, and support staff, especially in hospitals, put themselves at risk as they serve to save lives.  They epitomize what the word 'hero' means and we are immensely grateful for their service. Many thanks also to everyone who has in some way acknowledged the indispensable service of frontline workers.

As we continue to learn to do things in a new way, from remote work to online education and entertainment, let's toast to the indomitable strength of the human race in coming together, supporting one another, and adapting to new ways of living.

Cheers!
